Overview
I would work on a hybrid remote/office basis. The work environment was extremely pleasant, everyone would invite you for a chat and had an open door for questions of every kind. You are allowed to ask anything and also request anything. You are treated as any other new employee. Tasks of mine included University research (creating charts and statistics of University calendars all over the UK), reviewing past Events and creating improvement ideas for them, shadowing the Assessment Centre and even managing Final Stage Interviews. I reached my goal of improving my Excel skills, been included in weekly marketing, University Partnership and Recruitment meetings and assisted with multiple administrational tasks.
Skills
I set myself as goal to improve my excel skills and have been highly supported from FDM to reach that goal. Overall I have been introduced to many different software, technical equipment, internal processes and internal planning stages. Something that is probably highly underestimated (at least from me before I started the Internship) is the switch from student-life to full-time-work-life within a big corporation environment. This was a learning process within itself and I was very lucky to take my first few baby-steps surrounded by so many supporting and lovely people.
Responsibilities
100% I was encouraged to reach out to any department within the company that I was interested in and to take a look into. Whenever showcasing interest in a particular activity, I would be shown the necessary steps, would be encouraged to take them under supervision and then fulfil them by myself.
Support & Guidance
I was lucky enough to start with two other lovely girls and we have been introduced, guided and supported from day one. As previously mentioned, I could not have wished for a better working environment.
Culture
FDM Glasgow is a big, bright, modern office that provides many nieces, conference rooms and pods for more private meetings and conversations. In the main office is a kitchen niche and 6 (?) big tables which are home to the different departments within the branch. There are many conversations across the room and everyone is invited to other tables for a chat or to discuss a joint project. Lunch is usually taken together in the kitchen niche and whenever you meet someone while grabbing a coffee, they would check if you are alright or if you had any concerns, etc.
Your Impressions
Absolutely loved the experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity. However, as much as I enjoyed it, I must say that I unfortunately was not able to do everything that was listed in the job description due to unforeseeable circumstances with the office right before I started my Internship. Regardless, the people and the working environment definitely made up for it.
Yes
Be bolt and ask for everything you want to do. Every topic, every department, every meeting that sounds interesting to you: annoy the people to be included. Time flies so quickly that you will be angry with yourself for every missed opportunity.
