Overview
My placement was focused on conducting a research project for the company, which I developed from scratch. Day-to-day activities varied depending on the project stage, but some examples include analysing past Environmental and Sustainability Statements, interviewing various specialists within BH, and report writing. Furthermore, other project work related to BREEAM and EIA were also undertaken occasionally, which involved conducting desk research.
Skills
Through the placement, I was able to further developed my project management, research, and verbal and written communication skills. I also gained a lot of practical insights about the built environment sector and learned about how different disciplines approach and perform impact assessments, the different types of mitigation measures proposed in built development projects, and how deliverables are coordinated and produced.
Responsibilities
Yes, I took ownership of my research project and managed it independently with the support of my mentors. I was also able to pick up some additional project work whenever I had availability in my schedule.
Support & Guidance
My research project was supported by three mentors and the wider Environment team. Furthermore, while assisting on additional project work, instructions and guidance were provided, making it easy to learn quickly and work autonomously.
Culture
The culture was extremely casual, friendly, and supportive. I felt comfortable speaking up and attending team and company events. There doesn’t seem to be much hierarchy or competitiveness that are often associated with a consultancy environment, which made the experience much more enjoyable.
Your Impressions
I genuinely enjoyed my placement experience. It definitely exceeded my expectations.
Yes
Just do it, the company culture is extremely friendly. People at BH are very welcoming and supportive with interns and placement students, and you learn a lot on the job regardless of which team you are based in.
