Overview
The internship begins with a 2 week bootcamp to get everyone up to speed with the technology that they will use in their main project. Following this, you begin working on the main project, where a day would typically begin with a stand-up before working on the project. There are very few meetings throughout the week, allowing for a lot of productive time programming. Your tech lead reviews code to ensure high quality.
Skills
Yes, I've had a lot more exposure to new technologies. Firstly, the bootcamp is really helpful in learning fundamentals. For example, I had no previous experiences with Databases and Authentication, both of which were covered well. Pair programming with other interns provided new insights into ways different things can be programmed. In the main project, we put what we learnt in the bootcamp into practice, further developing our skills and knowledge.
Responsibilities
Yes, we were given a lot of freedom by both the client & our tech lead to create the app how we wanted to. This meant we would need to make decisions which impacted how the app was developed (which the tech lead still oversaw). I personally ended up managing a specific section of the app, being responsible for both the research and working out how to implement in.
Support & Guidance
I felt very supported by everyone in the office. Our tech lead and my fellow interns would always be willing to help with any issues I faced, and occasionally other employees who weren't directly associated with the internship would also help out things.
Culture
I really liked the vibe of the company. Morale events are great as they promote socialising outside of works (and are paid for!). There is a lot of transparency, and it is possible to find out what's happening in the company and why decisions were made fairly easily. Everyone is approachable, and it definitely feels like any feedback/concerns you have about the company are listened to and discussed appropriately.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the internship. It was definitely worthwhile as I learnt a lot and met some great people.
Yes
They look for a balance between both technical and soft skills, so definitely make sure that during the interviews you have examples for both.
