Overview
Control & automation interns have the opportunity to collaborate with process control specialists all across the world and gain exposure on how to improve the control of both oil & gas and the new low carbon assets. Examples of involvement: • Update the advanced process control system on a refinery. • Advise on the control philosophy for a new energy project. • Enhance bp’s knowledge & expertise via developing suitable practices / learning materials. • Engage with a vendor developing new technology.
Skills
There are a wide range of both technical and interpersonal skills that I have developed at bp. Firstly, I have improved (and been evaluated on) my ability to communicate and apply my technical knowledge on how to tune PID controllers and describe industrial control system architecture. I have delivered increasingly challenging presentations and was responsible for managing two projects during my internship. Collaborative problem-solving has also been significantly improved upon.
Responsibilities
Yes, the work that I was designated responsibility to manage and lead was very relevant and aligned with bp's goals and future direction and I am very pleased with the impact that my projects had and is foreseen to have on the business and in supporting my team after I left to resume my studies.
Support & Guidance
My Line Manager at bp was fantastic is setting out expectations and stretch activities and has definitely shaped my career going forwards. The internship is remarkably well-structured and enough support available from subject matter experts in whatever field you choose to pursue at bp.
Culture
The company culture and values was very well-suited to me and my personality and intrinsic beliefs. I had absolutely no issues in this regard and had a great time both at work and at out-of-hours socials. It is an office environment where people are eager to impart guidance and advice and the diversity is particularly impressive with bp being a global corporation.
Your Impressions
I have sincerely enjoyed my internship at bp, more so than other work placements. Not only was there enough engagement and support from my team but I have built close friendships with my cohort of interns and graduates. Regardless of whether or not I receive a return offer, I am confident that my employability has been furthered by this experience and I have learnt a great deal about my work-style preferences and chosen discipline area.
