    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was given my own project and with the help of my mentor and manager had to do everything from the very beginning to the end. By that I mean starting with sourcing and cleaning the data, moving to the actual analysis. I was taught SQL and Excel - tools I was using - to a quite good level. I used them both even though I had a very little previous knowledge. Then, I had to form my own recommendations and discuss it with a process team to see how I could implement my ideas. It ended with a final presentation where I presented my findings to senior colleagues.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I was taught how to use SQL that I had zero previous knowledge on. After 2/3 weeks I've managed to be quite good in it. Moreover, we also had some training on Excel to develop it to a more professional level - applicable in a workplace. Finally, as I had a lot of presentation practice I feel like I definitely developed some confidence and can present much better than I could before. Overall, the internship definitely helped me with my development.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given much responsibility during my internship. As I was given my own project I was responsible for it from the very beginning to the very end. My mentor and manager were advising and supporting me but it was very clear that the project is mine and that my ideas are the most valid. Furthermore, having given the recommendations, I could feel that they were really taken into consideration as if I was a normal employee not just an intern.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance during my internship. I was assigned a mentor, buddy and a manager. All of them were amazingly helpful. I could ask them about anything so I got help with anything I needed. From the help with work stuff to emotional support as I was in a new environment. I could feel that they actually cared and wanted to help rather than they were just instructed to do so which felt really good.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • That was probably one of the biggest highlights. The culture is really good, it does not feel like people are competing with one another, everyone wants to help the other and is proud of others successes. Moreover, Cap1 organises a lot of fun events such as sports day, summer festival to ensure that people actually can spend some quality time together and get to know each other as people not just coworkers. We also had coffee catch ups organised so we got to meet each other 1 on 1

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed the internship. I was given a lot of responsibility with my project, the work was interesting and I felt like I had impact on company's strategies. Moreover, the social aspect was really good as well. The intern cohort was very diverse and inclusive, same with the actual employees. We were given a lot of opportunities to socialise with each other. Moreover, I was also given a lot of training and help with everything.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Capital One
  • Their interviews really look at one's creativity and they are not boring - they actually were quite enjoyable. If you wanna work here you definitely need to be a very open minded person. Moreover, do not stress about not knowing sql or excel very well as you will receive all of the training. As it was a really enjoyable experience all I can really say is do not stress too much and apply cause it will be worth it
