Overview
As a Data Analyst within one of the teams in the Global Data Department, I worked pretty much on 2 different projects throughout my internship. The first part of the project involves business intelligence : Analyzing data and building dashboards to aid management decision making and the second part involved extensive data wrangling, manipulation, feature engineering, essentially the Exploratory Data Analysis process fully using Python Programming Language. There were a lot of opportunities to learn across different teams, learning from leaders across the firm, and also the different communities within the firm
Skills
Yes!. To be honest, my Python Skills were not the best they could be before the internship and by actively using it I had to learn on the go. It also helps that we have access to a massive wealth of learning resources and this aided learning. Also because of the open and collaborative culture you can speak to people around and ask lots of questions. I also improved in my networking skills, collaboration, teamwork, leadership and in terms of my emotional intelligence.
Responsibilities
Yes! Which I really do like. By much here, it does not mean the workload was too much but the knowledge of how impactful your project can be on the team gives you that sense of responsibility.
Support & Guidance
The mentor and buddy approach and communities mentor gave a lot of opportunity to get support and guidance. My mentor was super helpful in understanding and measuring success because there is so much to know about the product the team cover and 10 weeks cannot be enough to know all that. So guidance and support was provided across board
Culture
The culture is open and collaborative and everyone across board is supportive. The office structure also speaks to the culture as everyone is easily accessible. The Diversity and Inclusion at Bloomberg is also very much visible, leadership is very much reflective of the workforce and you can join communities for causes that matters much to you. Philanthropy is also at its best here in Bloomberg. You get a chance to volunteer and this counts towards volunteer hours which can be matched with donations to your registered charity of choice.
Your Impressions
Key things made the internship very memorable: 1. Mentor & Buddy System : The Mentor and Buddy system gives one the support system necessary for efficiency and also effectiveness during the internship 2. Projects : Exciting and Likewise challenging projects gives one the opportunity to leverage skills and also point out growth opportunities going forward 3. The Entire Intern Class: It was really nice getting to meet new people and work alongside them for the summer 4. Team : Been a member of the team was really exciting and also a great opportunity to build people skills 5. Communities : The communities within the firm were really helpful and they helped in achieiving sccess during the internship 6. Pantry : Bloomberg has a well stocked pantry and this is also equally helpful in making the internship an enjoyable one
Yes
Communicate your experiences well. This is important because it helps you put yourself forward and highlight your progress so far. For those applying to the data department, Python/SQL and generally Data Science & Analytics skills are really helpful. Apply. Don't wait for everything to be perfect, because in reality you're not.
