Overview
I was working on a project where I was involved in developing chemical processes for scale up. Most of my time was spent in the lab doing organic synthesis with some time spent doing analysis. Part of my project also involved working on a crystallisation project.
Skills
I learnt how to research new synthetic routes and apply my knowledge to attempt these routes in the lab. I was able to work alongside my supervisor in finding solutions to problems that arose and was able to gain independence in problem solving. I also developed communication skills from presenting my work in technical team meetings.
Responsibilities
At the beginning I worked quite closely with my supervisor, however as the year progressed I was able to be more independent and could work more autonomously in the lab. There were still times when I would arrange meetings with my supervisor to discuss my results and gain any feedback.
Support & Guidance
My supervisor and colleagues were very helpful and always found time to help me, despite their busy schedules. I never felt scared of asking for help and everyone was very approachable.
Culture
Everyone in my department was very friendly and approachable and once COVID restrictions had loosened we had lots of social events such as a departmental rounders and lunch.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my placement and would recommend it to other potential placement students. It was challenging at times but I learnt a lot and gained lots of new experience from my talented colleagues.
