    Skills

  • - I have learn't how to adapt communication methods based on who you are working with to ensure all parties have as much knowledge as each other to prevent hindrance to the project. - I have learn't how to format specific documents to ensure the require information can be seen clearly and specific notices can also be made aware to the reader. - I have developed my knowledge learn't at university thoroughly as it takes the academic knowledge learn't at university and shows me how to apply it to the real world. This is highly beneficial as it allows me to see how all the things I was taught, link together in the construction world.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At the start I was given some responsibility that was important, however it would not affect anything significantly if I under-performed. The responsibility allowed me to learn and see the daily tasks of a full-time employee in my role, while not applying too much pressure if I didn't get it fully correct. My Line manager and other team members were always there to go over my work provide feedback as well. Over time I was given far more responsibility, requiring me to meet deadlines and provide heavily detailed documents that would have an affect if not completed.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I have been given lots of support so far, mainly from my Line manager. She has allocated me work that she feels would benefit my placement experience and teach me valuable skills. She has always provided constructive feedback on all my work, allowing me to learn and build upon my reporting skills. She also involves me in meetings, some that I won't be able to contribute to, however I can witness and learn the entire design and construction process.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company is so welcoming, always offering assistance if required. They have multiple networks for specific groups, such as Parents at Mace, LGBT members, Women at Mace etc, to provide support and advice to those who need it. There are lots of social opportunities, which helps settle into your allocated team and make lots of friends. Everyone treats each other with respect in the office and online, which is great for someone like me who has only just started in this industry and feels lower than others.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • So far, I have fully enjoyed my placement as it has provided me with so many opportunities to learn and build upon my experiences, ready for when I finish university in two years time. I have witness so many real life process, which has helped me lots more than just learning about those at university. I have also seen how teams can work effiicently. • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Mace
  • I would say that putting yourself into the working world can be daunting, especially for such a large corporation in London, however with Mace, there is so much in place to help you dismiss these worries and fully make the most out of your placement experience. Don't be afraid to take the many opportunities offered to you and socialise with those you work with, as everyone is really friendly and was in your position before. Also don't feel like you are new so you won't receive as much respect as others, everyone treats everyone with respect at Mace.
