Overview
Working on a software-engineering related project to build a feature for the Bloomberg Terminal. On a day to day basis it involves learning about the Bloomberg software architecture, writing code to be merged in the existing code base and having it peer reviewed and approved, and participating in daily standups with the rest of the team. Sometimes I have to present my work in different groups. There are also social events organized for interns on some days.
Skills
Yes - programming in Python using Pyspark, Pytest, Pandas etc, networking with new people, writing cleaner code
Responsibilities
Yes, my project was quite intense but I did not have the autonomy to work at a very fast pace since each step had to be reviewed before it could e approved and integrated, which took quite a lot of time
Support & Guidance
A lot. My mentor was almost always available for any questions that I had and when needed the other members of my team were also very helpful and responsive.
Culture
Everyone is always happy to help, so working here is always a pleasant experience from the social perspective.
Your Impressions
Quite a lot. The social experience was very pleasant, and I was able to develop some technical skills that will be useful in the development of my career. The pace of work did get a bit frustrating sometimes because it felt that I could proceed a lot faster if my work did not have to be reviewed at every single step.
Yes
Come in with an open mind and understand the scope of your work in the bigger picture early on so as to be aware of your impact in the organization. Don't hesitate to reach out for help, don't spend too long trying to work something out if you're stuck - it will likely be a 2-minute task for someone else in your team.
