Overview
I mainly dealt with section designs using FEA software to extract forces and Excel to ensure that the section of the pier stem created satisfies eurocode conditions.
Skills
I’ve learnt strut and tie modelling, as well as the design process from the ground up, as opposed to to top down of a bridge pier. I also had the chance to improve upon my autocad skills in order to make my work more efficient.
Responsibilities
Yes I was designing all the piers for the whole 200+m span bridge for one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This amount of responsibility given to me was quite a pleasant surprise.
Support & Guidance
My line manager and supervisor gave me a lot of support when I had doubts with my tasks. They also provided the theory behind the “algorithmic” process in which we follow in design.
Culture
Everyone was very chill and most people look forward to coming into the office, although we were given the flexibility to work from home.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed meeting people from different countries in Mott Macdonald. I also enjoyed the work we do as the project directly adds value into the Uk economy.
Yes
Be yourself, and make sure you know your technicals. Show an interest into infrastructure projects as they are the core business for Mott Macdonald.
