Overview
A typical day involves a scrum meeting, a couple of team meetings or with other seniors to talk about their work. Frequently there will be talks, events or training on different topics. Daily tasks include updating others on work progress, coding for about 3-4h or getting help with a blocker. You are responsible for 1-2 new features at a time.
Skills
The internship developed my agile understanding, communication, SQL, Python and web API skills. Also, had the opportunity to learn C# and Angular while working.
Responsibilities
Was responsible for a new feature in the internal software UI that helped the trader's work by making new information available in the UI. The task completion was a dependency for another team's task. Developed a backend notification system that identified errors in the backend and logged them to be fixed.
Support & Guidance
Had two seniors meeting with me weekly and on almost a daily basis to give guidance on my tasks and make sure I am making meaningful progress throughout the internship. They made sure I managed to get the work done by the end of the internship and that I enjoyed my time. Everyone was very responsive and ready to help with any question.
Culture
The culture was calmer than I expected for a bank. Deadlines were pretty flexible and people were accepting delays if a blocker arrived. There was an emphasis on quality over quantity. The staff is friendly and rather formal but is very receptive to any needs of others. There is a corporate culture but there is not so much bureaucracy.
Your Impressions
Very much enjoyed all the aspects of the internship.
