Overview
As an intern I was placed on various projects centred around hydraulic modelling using software such as HEC-RAS and flood risk assessments for proposed developments. Projects are usually worked on one at a time (i.e. 2 weeks on one then move on to the next), but there was also various smaller tasks to complete in different projects such as GIS tasks and data management tasks in excel.
Skills
Yes improved upon and built upon skills using hydraulic modelling software such as HEC RAS. Also improved GIS skills and became competent in different GIS software than I was previously accustomed to. Learnt the format and structure of a professional Flood Risk Assessment so can complete these in a consultancy environment in future.
Responsibilities
Yes was given set tasks to complete individually for each project. Was also given the responsibility of completing a Flood Risk Assessment for a client. Although given individual responsibly in completing these tasks there was always plenty of support available to me both in person and through teams in different offices so I was never left not knowing what to do or how to do it if an issue arose.
Support & Guidance
My line manager and assigned 'buddy' in the office were very helpful in directing me and being present if anything unfamiliar arose. Although given individual responsibly in completing tasks on various projects, there was always plenty of support available to me both in person and through teams in different offices so I was never left not knowing what to do or how to do it if an issue arose.
Culture
A welcoming environment for interns with all the team happy to help. Positive environment with wellbeing walks, payday drinks, and out of office social activities to get involved with if you choose. Great atmosphere for young people/graduates/interns in the office as there are many grads a similar age alongside more senior staff.
Your Impressions
Overall found it very rewarding and gave a good insight into what a grad job within the company would consist of.
Yes
Be enthusiastic about the position and type of work you are applying for and try to have some experience in the sort of tasks/ software you are likely to use.
