Overview
Each day varied but typically involved attending agile ceremonies such as daily stand up, story refinement, retro, and story closure. Outside of that, I received training for my job role and was given a project to work on throughout my internship. I wrote code and tests for this project with the support of my team and mentor.
Skills
I developed my technical skills massively, especially in terms of writing high quality and testable code. I also learnt a lot about software engineering in industry, such as agile methodologies, working in teams and across multiple teams, and communicating with other job roles in the business (such as product and design).
Responsibilities
I was given lots of responsibility throughout my internship. I was ultimately responsible for the successful delivery of my project and I received a huge amount of support. I was able to deploy my project to customer-facing capital one systems, and really appreciated that enough trust was placed in me, as an intern, to be Ble to do this.
Support & Guidance
The support received throughout my internship was amazing. Each intern was assigned three different points of contact: a mentor, a manager and a buddy. The other members of my team were always happy to help me with any problems and to spend times explaining things to me. Everyone I met at Capital One was so friendly and happy to help me with anything.
Culture
The culture at Capital One was great and there was a real focus on work-life balance. The culture was very inclusive and I felt welcomed from my first day. Everyone at the company was incredibly friendly and approachable, and there was a real culture of helping and supporting each other.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the internship and would recommend it. I learnt a huge amount and feel that the whole experience was massively valuable. There was a huge amount of different experiences offered outside of the job role, including a speaker series with company directors, a trip to the London office, a volunteering day.
Yes
I'd advise others to make the most of the support on offer, both during recruiting and during the internship. Everyone at the company is really approachable and will do their best to help and offer advice/support.
