Overview
Learning about systems engineering from members of the team, and helping projects by using tools such as Excel and MATLAB.
Skills
Strongly developed my MATLAB Simulink skills and gained some Python knowledge through online training modules.
Responsibilities
I was given responsibility to complete work for my project, but with the understanding from my team that it would take me a little extra time to learn.
Support & Guidance
I received an amazing amount of support during my placement. My team and supervisors were very understanding that a lot of this work was completely new to me, and they had a lot of patience, giving me the space to go through things and learn. Although they were there to provide guidance when I asked.
Culture
I feel very supported at BAE. There's a highly positive atmosphere and I do feel valued not just as an employee but as a human too. It's definitely a professional environment so the office was a bit quieter compared to what I've experienced on previous placements.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement, and definitely gained a sense of value within the company despite only being here for the summer placement. Out of all companies in industry, I would definitely prefer to return to BAE Systems. Although I would try a different role next time which is more suitable to my skill set.
Yes
My advice would be to stay positive during the process, and showcase what skills you can bring to the company- not just from a university course but as a person. One thing I noticed during inductions is every placement student has a hobby or a sport that they're passionate about, so explore the skills you've gained from this during interviews or application questions! It's also okay to go for a job role outside your comfort zone. I went into systems with more mechanical experience, but doing this placement has given me so many skills I wouldn't have otherwise gained.
