Overview
My role involved data management and booking management. Working on The National Tutoring Programme meant there was a great deal of new data incoming every day, this needed to be kept organised in order for consultants and schools to be able to access information whenever required- quickly and efficiently. My role was to input this data into a large spreadsheet. On a day-to-day basis, I would begin work and immediately check for any new bookings, if we had some I would gather the necessary info such as school name, tuition type etc and input this into the spreadsheet. I would then assign this to a consultant within Randstad who would take control of the booking.
Skills
During my time at Randstad, I have developed so many valuable skills that I will be taking along with me into my final year at university and into the world of work when I finish studies. For example, my time management skills have become incredibly strong, and I’m now aware of the importance of distinguishing between important and urgent tasks, which meant I completed my day to day tasks much more efficiently. Whilst I was fairly strong at communicating before I joined Randstad, these skills have been strengthened massively. I feel much more confident in my ability, and can communicate effectively with individuals from all different backgrounds.
Responsibilities
I was given a massive amount of responsibility during my placement, and I think that’s why I enjoyed my time at Randstad so much! I wasn’t just the tea lady, I was a valued member of the team who had my own tasks to complete daily. My manager was really good at supporting me, but also allowing me the freedom to develop my own independence. As a result, but Christmas I was taking complex queries on alone, working with consultants and candidates to come to a resolve.
Support & Guidance
I can’t fault Randstad for the support I was provided. As a placement student, I was placed on training courses that were specifically aimed at placement students. Not only did it give us the opportunity to meet other students, it also gave us the freedom to feed back to the company and they really took everything we had to say on board. On a personal level, my manager and senior, were amazing at supporting me. Nothing was too much and if they ever thought I was feeling a little overwhelmed they were right there to help me out. Even my colleagues, they were all so supportive of me during my development over the year.
Culture
Randstad are committed to ensuring that employees enjoy their jobs and it was evident every day. From 1-1 weekly meetings to check on progress, to regular training, at all times you were supported. Everyone was so always so friendly, and so willing to help. The office I worked in was quite young overall, and as a whole there were a number of other placement students who worked on different teams so at no point was I in need of a friendly face.
Your Impressions
I loved my placement year, it was easily one of the best decisions I made. As I do Linguistics and Sociology at university, a placement year wasn’t necessarily vital to my degree and I took the initiative to do one by myself. I finished my year a month or so ago, and I honestly miss everyone so much already. I was supported at every stage, and given the freedom necessary to develop existing and new skills. I’ve left a much more confident individual, I have so much more faith in my own capabilities.
Yes
Give it your all! All they ask at Randstad, is that you try new things and do your best and honestly, after doing so the benefits that come with it are amazing. The application process does have a number of steps, but you’re supported every step of the way and they genuinely do want to do good by you, so they place you wherever they think you are suited. Use your initiative, and don’t be afraid to ask questions, even questions you think may be obvious.
