Overview
Over the two week scheme I was given a variety of tasks, such as research tasks, presentations and writing blog posts. The research tasks were related to real work or commercial issues relevant to the teams I was sat in, which was very rewarding. There was plenty of support from my supervisors and trainee buddies. There were a number of interesting workshops and structured networking sessions throughout the scheme.
Skills
I improved my research skills, particularly how to present research and how to use a wide range of sources. I improved presentation skills - we were tasked with doing a group I&D presentation, and it was valuable to learn how to deliver a hybrid presentation. I improved my time management skills also.
Business Insight
There were many online internal resources which allowed us to learn about RPC's business goals and how they aim to provide the best service for clients. We were able to talk to people at all levels of the firm and there were presentations which explained career progression from trainee level onwards.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere were great! There was plenty of support from my trainee buddy and supervisor in both teams I was sat in, as well as from the Early Talent team. In general everyone was willing to explain what they were working on or talk about their time at RPC, from trainees to partners. It was very inclusive and I always felt as if I could be myself.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the Vacation Scheme a lot. There was never a situation where I felt as if I had nothing to do, or that I had been given a task just to keep me busy. Everyone was friendly and made me feel welcome immediately. The scheme was well structured so there was a good balance of work in departments, personal development in workshops and being able to socialise with other vac schemers or trainees.
Yes
Research the firm well - learn about the areas of expertise and values, and show how that ties in to your interests and commercial awareness in the application form. Show genuine enthusiasm about the firm and the work that they do, and don't be too nervous at the assessment centre because everyone wants you to do well!
