Overview
Two weeks' work experience in two different departments, supervised by trainees and associates, carrying out various tasks including research, reviewing expert reports and attending client meetings. I also attended workshops on personal branding and cryptocurrency, as well as networking events, socials and even volunteering organised by the firm.
Skills
The scheme enabled me to develop my legal research skills, as I carried out research into unfamiliar areas of law, and the ability to present my findings clearly and efficiently - whether in a research note or communicating them to the team. As the two weeks were filled with lots of real-life legal work, firm and team events and business development tasks (such as drafting blogs) my ability to manage time improved significantly.
Business Insight
Spending one week each in the firm's insurance and commercial teams allowed me to get an understanding of RPC's broad practice. The firm was excellent in setting up events where we could meet people from departments (other than the two we sat in). The partners, associates and trainees I came across were all very happy to go for a coffee break and answer any questions about their day to day work.
Culture
The company culture was the best part of the experience. The supervisors and trainee buddies were very supportive, and everyone was eager for you to do well. Taking part in the group project presentation showed that the firm takes its inclusion and diversity scheme very seriously. The culture put me at ease, and I was able to be myself during the two weeks.
Your Impressions
The scheme was fantastic, and really showcased the firm's friendly culture and incredible work for sector-leading clients, as well as a real insight into what life would be like as a trainee at RPC.
Yes
The biggest advice is to focus on RPC - the work it does, its clients and their sectors and most importantly the firm's culture. Do lots of research and speak to as many people as possible throughout the application process!
