    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • On day 1 and 2, I joined zoom sessions with the whole Spring cohort. We explored Citi's work ethics and initiatives as well as their company culture. They held a Q&A panel session for some of their programs and opened up and answered many of the questions we had. On day 3 and 4, I was able to visit the Citi office in-person, where I had a buddy to shadow. I was able to understand what the role of a software engineer in Citi entails and what they do in their day to day job.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication and team work skills whilst networking with other spring interns. I was also able to develop problem solving and coding skills during a python coding session. I also had to listen attentively during the speaker's session and conduct my own independent research to keep up with the financial terminology and acronyms. And finally, I was able to work on my organisation and time management skills so I could balance this internship with my other commitments.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • They held plenty of sessions on how to improve your applications for the summer internship opportunities they have, which also included a CV session and a Q&A panel. They explained the process of applying and what the assessment centre entails. I was also able to understand more of their business structure whilst attending their offices in-person and seeing all the different departments. I could ask my buddy more questions to understand how each department works together - such as business associates working with software engineers.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone at Citi seemed really friendly and supportive. They always offered help and were open to answer any questions their colleagues had. They would sit down and explain to them to make sure they understood. I also believe that they're really inclusive especially with religions. They took me to the prayer room during both days I visited and they were super accommodating. Made me feel really comfortable too as they waited whilst I prayed.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed the insight as well as meeting the other Spring Interns. Before I didn't really understand how an investment bank works but after the insight I now have a much better understanding. I really like the company talks and how they support women in the industry. I really liked exploring their offices and all the different departments. After shadowing a software engineer, I understood what sort of projects they work on, the programming languages and technologies they use.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Citi
  • Prepare for the interviews by reflecting on your own experiences and understanding the impact they had on the work. Find your motivation for the company and anything that particularly interests you about Citi. Don't worry about the financial terms when applying for the technology department, as you can research and pick that up as long as you go. But it's also worthwhile to research what the company is currently doing and read any related news articles from LinkedIn or their company website.
