Overview
I spent 1 week in the Competition department and 1 week in the Banking and Finance department. In Competition, I would meet with my supervisor who would go over the previous day's tasks and allocate tasks for the day. I carried out research tasks which focused on new legislation and attended a client meeting. In Banking, I carried out research tasks, attended client meetings and learned how to fill out various banking forms.
Skills
The Scheme enabled me to develop and strengthen my legal research skills. For one particular research task, my findings were being passed onto the client, meaning I had to effectively simplify legal terminology and ensure the document was drafted in a way which was able to be understood by someone with no legal expertise. This undoubtedly, developed my written communication skills. Attending client meetings enabled me to observe the way in which my supervisor interacted with clients, which was invaluable in developing my client communication skills.
Business Insight
It was great to hear all about Dentons and the potential roles available. Attending breakfast with 2 partners at the firm and hearing about their journey to partnership was truly an inspiring experience. It was particularly interesting to hear about the firms relationships with their clients and the various secondment opportunities available. Learning about the various practice areas within the firm was enthralling as it demonstrated the array of exciting opportunities available to future trainees.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere across both the Glasgow and Edinburgh offices was one of the main reasons I chose to accept a training contract with Dentons. During my time at the firm, I worked with a number of employees and each person made me feel welcomed and supported. Additionally, Dentons commitment to inclusion and diversity, created a positive workplace environment. It was evident that Dentons are committed to ensuring their employees are provided with opportunities to progress their careers through secondment opportunities and ensuring trainees are challenged and supported.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the vacation scheme. The experience far exceeded my expectations. I was made to feel welcomed and supported during the entire scheme which enabled me to put my best self forward. Each task I completed was interesting and challenging. The scheme was extremely insightful and I am thoroughly looking forward to joining the firm as a trainee in 2024.
Yes
It is imperative to carry out detailed research on the firm. I would also recommend attending an insight evening before applying. Be sure to proof read all written answers. During the interview stages, my advice would be to be yourself and let your personality shine through. Dentons really are interested in your experiences, skills and personality. For the assessment centre, think commercially. When answering each question and completing written tasks, be sure to demonstrate commercial awareness and link your answers back to Dentons.
