First Year Scheme Review

The Insight Scheme was a very useful way to explore how the firm operates on a day-to-day basis. The scheme was split into two groups, one undertaking a day of sessions, and the other spending their time in a department to get involved in trainee tasks. Each student was assigned an associate supervisor who introduced them to the firm and set them tasks. The sessions were on the different practice areas and purpose-driven initiatives.

During the scheme, getting involved in typical trainee tasks allowed me to develop existing skills. For example, in a research task set, I was asked to summarise a 70+ page document into 4 pages that identified the key points of a new piece of legislation. I improved my analytical skills and attention to detail when picking relevant information. Further, I simplified the language to make it easy to read in a training session.

The sessions were extremely helpful in providing an insight into the firm's practice areas and the work that they involve. The case studies were especially valuable in seeing the types of high-profile deals that Latham & Watkins undertakes. Further, the Graduate Recruitment Team provided a 'Next Steps' session, providing tips on how to have a successful recruitment process and what positions were available at the firm for students.

I thoroughly enjoyed the company culture and felt that Latham & Watkins made a conscious effort to provide numerous networking opportunities with members of the firm. All members of the firm, from trainees to partners, were very friendly and made the effort to speak to me during my work shadowing and in sessions. I also enjoyed the social event organised for the Insight Scheme participants. Overall, I was made to feel very comfortable and welcome.

I very much enjoyed the Insight Scheme; the experience consolidated my interest in the firm and deepened my knowledge of the firm's internal business model. I also felt that being given a week with the firm was very valuable - it allowed a good amount of time to explore all aspects of the firm. My favourite aspect of the scheme was undertaking work shadowing in the DTT department and getting involved in engaging trainee tasks.

I advise applying for the First Year Scheme prior to applying for the Vacation Scheme. This is because the First Year Scheme allows an exclusive insight into the firm, expands your networks with Latham & Watkins, and provides in-depth knowledge to include in your application. It also provides a fast-track process to a place on the firm's assessment centre, as you will already been partly assessed through the First Year Scheme application process.
