Overview
I was a support engineer who worked with a number of different people such as engineers, scientists and managers, as well as external networks. I participated in product related projects for which I would carry out product manufacture and testing in an engineering and science laboratory, write technical engineering reports, model in CAD software and draw and review technical drawings. I was able to manage small personal projects, along with bigger company ones which I particularly enjoyed as I have never had a chance to do this previously.
Skills
Firstly, I was able to significantly develop basic soft skills such as communication, particualrly with individuals of higher standing, project management and leadership, industry style teamworking, time management, presentation skills, adaptability and problem-solving skills. Using a new CAD software made me more comfortable in different software interfaces and develop my technical skills. By working in the engineering laboratory I was able to operate various machinery and even learn extensive amounts about different 3D printing. Additionally, I got to know the ins and outs of new product development. As I had the opprortunity to also work in a science laboratory, I was able to familiarise myself with non conventional engineering environments expanding my technical skills beyond my engineering degree.
Responsibilities
Most definitely. From the start of my placement I was involved in the main department projects and was quickly given the responsibility to carry out product builds, product testing, generate results and report findings all by myself. I had the opportunity to design and draw several different tools that went on to be manufactured for project use. Towards the second half of my placement I put in charge of managing a couple of different projects, one being a major project that involved collaborations of several different individuals, teams and suppliers all across the world.
Support & Guidance
Throughout my placement I had several points of contact that provided me with support whenever I needed it. These included my line manager, my mentor, department colleagues and graduate program associates. All these people were incredibly approachable and friendly, making it super easy to speak to them if anything ever came up. I could go to them if certain work became overwhelming, I was having problems with the work I was doing at the time, or if I had any particular questions about anything. The weekly 1 to 1s with my manager were also very useful I they were able to keep and eye on my workload and working environment.
Culture
The general environment and culture was very friendly. Despite there being a mix of people from different age groups it was still super easy to get along with almost everyone not just in your department but also from other places in the company. On top of that, there were quite a number of other placement students which was fantastic as we were all able to become very good friends both at work and outside it. Because of that we often met up outside of work to explore the area or simply hang out.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Pall, I had a chance to develop myself in a multitude of areas. Looking at all the number of soft and technical skills I have either developed or learned is incredible. It has been so beneficial to me and has actually made going back to university harder than I thought it would be as I just want to continue working there. I have made the decision to apply to their graduate programmes as I think they also have much to offer.
Yes
Ensure that you have some knowledge about Pall as well as its products. One thing I would definitely recommend is being aware which business unit you are applying to. Be open minded when it comes to problems solving because not all problems will be ones you know much about or have been exposed to before. Honestly, Pall is all about 'being right for the team' so be yourself, show them exactly what skills you have got to offer and why you think you are the best choice.
