Overview
Planning experimental design to complete my project on time. Usually will be in the lab at least 2 times a week. Interact with other CRH scientists daily and am also able to shadow them to enhance my skill set.
Skills
Developed lab skills (such as tissue culture, western blots etc.) and data analysis skills. Also learnt what it means to be in a professional research environment.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given guidance and advice but am very much able to independently make decisions about my project.
Support & Guidance
Especially during the first month I receive a lot of training and guidance to then later be able to work independently in the lab and office. Every week I sit down with my managers to discuss the development of the project and experiments/data. I can also ask anyone from the organisation for support or help on anything. It is a very supportive environment to work in.
Culture
There are monthly meet ups (optional of course) to catch up with everyone from all departments. It is a very relaxed environment that gives you a lot of freedom in how you work.
Your Impressions
I feel like I have learnt more in the past few months at this placement than I have 2 years at university. The skills learnt during this placement can not be taught in a lecture hall and I find them extremely valuable. Whether it be lab skills or other soft skills. It teaches you how to work in a professional environment.
Yes
It's not vital that you have a lot of laboratory experience to apply. Definitely apply and just be yourself.
