Overview
I would get assigned to projects, get a briefing to make sure I understand the context, and then learn to carry out calculations/research/analyses, or be asked to repeat a task I have done before.
Skills
I both learned new skills and developed the existing ones, though I would have preferred to be challenged more I still learned a lot about structural engineering.
Responsibilities
I had a fair amount of responsibility as an intern, I felt like my observations and my work were valued, and my questions were always welcome.
Support & Guidance
I received some support from certain people. But the key people were quite busy with work and holidays (understandable as it was summer), so many times I couldn't fully reach certain learning goals.
Culture
It was a really relaxed and supportive environment. I felt comfortable at the office every day and was never expected to work long hours. We had a good number of social activities. which helped me get to know people outside of work.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship a lot as I liked most of the work I did, and all the people that I met. It was a great experience.
Yes
Be proactive and seek the opportunities you're looking for whether it seems feasible or not (as long as it is reasonable). It is better to ask and wait than not ask at all, because as soon as time(/resources) allows people will do their best to make adjustments for you.
