Overview
Every day involved learning more about Clifford Chance as a business. This ranged from talking to different practice areas to learning about their diversity strategy. There were opportunities to partake in trainee tasks through an unreleased virtual internship and during a two-day work shadowing of a practice area.
Skills
This depended on what tasks your supervisor has given you but usually, it was a good opportunity to develop commercial awareness and research skills as you get to see the real problems lawyers may be dealing with. I personally improved my drafting, research and problem-solving.
Business Insight
It was amazing learning about the various practice areas out there and having the chance to ask questions to trainees, associates and partners about their favourite aspects of their work. It gave a unique overview of the choices out there and the pros and cons of each.
Culture
Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. There was always a lot of collaboration going on in the practice area I was in. Generally, people would welcome you to ask questions and were really transparent about what working at the firm was like and what they enjoyed and didn't.
Your Impressions
As a first year, you do not get much of a chance to try trainee tasks and it was a great opportunity to see real deals and contribute. I think it was an amazing opportunity to develop and learn more about the firm.
Yes
Learn more about what trainees do, the type of tasks they participate in and how they support the firm. Be clear about what makes Clifford Chance different to their competitors and who its clients are. Try to speak to trainees or those who worked at Clifford Chance to find out more about the firm and what makes it unique.
