Overview
It was a week of real work, enjoyable socials and talks from different practice groups in the firm. These were a great way to ask questions and get know the firm better. I was assigned a trainee buddy and manager. I had the opportunity to work with various people in the firm in varying seniority which I enjoyed and valued. I was able to get involved with a range of different tasks, including research tasks.
Skills
I developed my research skills further and learned how to apply them in a practical way. My listening skills improved through attending various sessions and asking follow-up questions. My commercial awareness was enhanced through understanding how my work impacts real clients, developments in the regulatory space and distilling key information for clients. My communication skills were continually developed throughout the week through the vast opportunities to meet new people, both inside and outside my team.
Business Insight
Through the various talks throughout the week, it was a great way to learn more about the firm. This enabled me to ask follow-up questions and enabled me to learn even more about the firm. A partner coffee built into the firm's timetable guarantees the opportunity to speak to someone senior about the firm, learn more about their role, gain advice and learn about how the firm has developed over time. I found this very helpful.
Culture
The firm is known for being very friendly and this is what I experienced at the firm. Everyone, regardless of seniority, is kind and approachable. My manager regularly gave me feedback and guidance which was very helpful. My trainee buddy was also very kind, supportive and always made time for me. I had a great experience and valued the firm's culture. The firm's culture made the vacation scheme an enjoyable and memorable experience.
Your Impressions
Given that this was a 1 week Winter Vacation Scheme, I was pleasantly surprised about the number of enjoyable events that were held during my five days at the firm. I felt that the scheme was designed with the intern's needs in mind, with a focus on making it an enriching and memorable experience. Graduate Recruitment are very approachable and were a great support for all of us during the scheme. This made the scheme enjoyable.
Yes
Research the firm thoroughly before applying. You should ensure that your interests genuinely align with the firm's key sectors. Think about which practice group you would like to do your vacation scheme in as this is asked as part of the application. Practice video interviews if this is something you are not comfortable with. Timing is key during the assessment centre so plan your time accordingly and make sure you have enough time to complete every task.
