Overview
I was given typical trainee work by my supervisor to complete throughout the day and had the opportunity to ask others in the department if they could send me work to do. We probably had from 2-4 hours of talks per day organised by grad recruitment and then around that we had freedom to get work done and organise chats with people we wanted to speak to. I also got to join calls with supervisor.
Skills
I definitely developed time management skills as lots of people sent me work to do after I asked them which meant I had to make sure I could attend all the talks while making sure I got all the work done in time for them. This was difficult when you are not always sure how long something will take you, given you haven't done it before.
Business Insight
As all the interns were in different departments, we got to speak to each other about all our jobs and find out about all the different areas. There was also a practice group insight where we got to speak to every department in the firm and find out about the work they do, the size, typical clients, etc. We also had talks from the Solutions group, Purpose and the Senior Partner.
Culture
Everyone was lovely and very friendly. But you could clearly see the ambition of the firm and how they did top quality work, while supporting each other. I was worried about bothering people in the department but whenever I introduced myself they seemed genuinely interested in me.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight and it was so much less scary than I was imagining. It went by in a blur and we all agreed we wish we could have done another week instead of only one.
Yes
To not worry too much if you get to the vacation scheme. I know I was really nervous and was probably too quiet on Monday but because it's only a week you need to make the most of every day.
