Overview
We received work from our trainers and buddies, attended presentations from different groups within the firm, and were given opportunities to meet with specific individuals if we chose to.
Skills
I have improved my legal research skills as this is one of the tasks I was given. I also developed my understanding of derivatives and structured finance, especially the specific problems they solve and why clients might be interested in using them. Lastly, I developed communication skills by giving a group presentation and by speaking to many of A&O’s fee earners.
Business Insight
We heard from legal practice areas, Pro Bono, Fuse, D&I and from the managing partner. Therefore we experienced all aspects of the business and how they fit together to give exceptional client service. Further, Gareth explained A&O’s strategic vision which helped us understand the business’s future direction.
Culture
The company culture was very welcoming, which is not what one would expect of a magic circle firm. The early careers team were instrumental in this in the first day, but this culture became more evident with every person I encountered. On one occasion a (very busy) partner spoke to me for around 30 minutes about the work he does and how what I was doing fit into that. Very welcoming indeed.
Your Impressions
I loved my week here, which is why I have accepted their offer to return as a trainee solicitor.
Yes
First, ensure your application has no spelling mistakes. Second, when answering questions, think about the kind of issues clients have and how they might be solved. Third, ensure your application is written honestly and clearly - as this is how A&O write to their clients. Lastly, any experience is relevant to the application, but it depends on how you frame it.
