The Role
Overall a wide variety of projects to get involved in, and a fantastic team to support me as well. Great company culture, social activities, and charity events as well. Could have had the opportunity to partake in things like conferences or travelling to different sites, but wasn't given the chance which was a slight disappointing.
One of the key things about my year, was how I was valued by not just my division, but others as well. Everyone who I completed projects for showed their appreciation, and nothing seemed to be taken for granted.
On the whole, direction was okay, and the support was definitely there from my supervisor. However, my manager was fairly distant, and I had little contact/support from him over the year. Supervisor was always available to talk to if I had any problems or queries.
I was kept at a busy level of work for most of the year, although sometimes I felt I could have upped my workload - but instead it was outsourced to agencies. Also there were some other areas of the business I felt I could have completed work for within my schedule, but unfortunately didn't get the chance.
The experience of working in a corporate company is invaluable, more so to my future working life than my actual degree.
The Company
Atmosphere was overall happy and hard working, although much quieter than I had initially anticipated. A lot of the team were often on the road or at conferences, so there were only 4 or 5 in the office. But this was quite nice sometimes to have a quiet place to get your head down!
There was no hand over for me as there was no previous student the year before. The recruitment process was a bit dodgey as well, as I was kept in the dark for a few months as to when it would start, what to expect, and general information about my role or 3M as a whole.
A lot of extra training and development was included. I had various training days, including legal, corporate, marketing excellence, e-marketing, etc. These workshops were fantastic, and extremely helpful for my role. What's more, we organised several workshops as part of student development, or different areas or skills that we had been given. Again, it was a good chance to organise a development day ourselves, whilst educating the other students as the same time.

The company has so many businesses, so it gives you the opportunity to work in a totally different business/segment, but under the same company and culture. What's more, they have a well known grad scheme, which for me sounds very appealing.
The Culture
Some students didn't socialise as much as others, so it was a mixed bag. A few of the grads that were previous statements were really part of our student group, and were always out with us on nights out and other after work events.
Loughborough is fantastic in terms of price. Rent was cheap - an up market double bedroom apartment for the 2 of us was £425 a month. Local pubs you could pick up a pint for £1.50, and the likes of Home Bargains and Farm Foods made every day living extremely cheap.
Night life isn't fantastic, but it had everything we needed. There's a few lovely pubs, and a few cheaper dingier pubs. In terms of clubs, there's very little - although vodka revs is always a good choice. Then there's the student union on a friday if you want another cheap night out.
There were various sports clubs to get involved with, as well as the occasional company event/night out.
