Overview
There were several talks given on subjects such as the nature of the work that the firm was involved in as well as the firm environment. Everyone was very friendly within the firm and ensured there was enough time to answer questions (of which there were a lot) at the end of session, which were answered helpfully and patiently. The work given on the second day was interesting and insightful.
Skills
The main thing I took away from the experience was a new understanding and appreciation for the firm, which they worked very hard to give to interns. In my work on the second day, I was able to do some researching and drafting which allowed me to develop those skills a little, but due to the short time frame there are not too many opportunities to develop skills.
Business Insight
The opportunities to understand about the business were fantastic. In the two days, I was able to talk to not just trainees, but also associates and even partners who took time out of their day to have a casual chat as well as answer more specific questions about the firm and the work. The graduate recruitment team worked hard to give all of the interns opportunities to engage with other members and hosted specific talks.
Culture
Everybody in the firm was very helpful and willing to engage with the interns. People were friendly to each other and there is a clear non-hierarchical element to the firm, with all staff working in the same open plan areas. People were very friendly and willing to help, despite the fact I was only there for the day and everyone seemed genuinely interested in you as a human being rather than a potential future fee-earner.
Your Impressions
The insight was fantastic. The work was interesting and everyone was very involved in the insight process. The networking event on the first evening was very good, and allowed all of the interns a chance to connect with employees on a less formal basis. The sessions were a good length and were engaging and interesting. It was simply a very good all-round informative experience.
Yes
The firm really appreciates individuality and varied experience. Everybody that I talked to took different paths to the firm and was appreciated for their different backgrounds, so definitely do not feel like you have to tick any particular boxes. One thing I would recommend is to make sure you've done some research before attending the scheme, as it just helps with getting the most out of the presentation and research opportunities in key sectors.
