Overview
The role was quite varied, I had the opportunity to go on multiple mini placements within the company, but generally it was supporting with other engineers in developing dfmea processes, or setting up testing, or doing sole projects researching competitor products, or coding automation software to optimise processes.
Skills
Many new skills were learnt, my job spanned across both electronics and mechanical engineering, and so led to me learning lots of cross curricular skills and helped broaden my knowledge of other areas of engineering, as well as improving my skills learnt at university and general interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities
In areas where I felt comfortable and competent I was tasked with projects/research solely led and managed by myself, but was also provided plenty of support where I wasn't entirely capable myself.
Support & Guidance
Some areas gave me loads of guidance, specifically in certain teams, whilst others, and the general HR early careers team weren't quite as good.
Culture
Everyone seems excited to see what the future will hold, the board of directors often do videos and conferences where they genuinely seem extremely passionate about the company which is nice to see, the company being so old and large is a little set behind current workplace trends (ie free hot drinks, 4 day work week etc.) but these are minor points, and to be expected at such a large company.
Your Impressions
The placement itself has been very enjoyable, with over 90 undergraduate and a couple of hundreds graduates in the company there are lots of people around my age and experience level able to support, in some areas hybrid working is possible (where you're not required to be onsite to use machinery etc) the only real point I'd knock off would be the location in the country, but that is down to personal choice and the activities I enjoy outside of work.
Yes
This is an excellent placement both for getting your foot in the door in automotive, and their aim is to provide easy entry into the grad scheme from the undergraduate placement, but it is also an extremely large and well known company that stands you in good stead to apply elsewhere, their engineers are highly respected and likely to find other work easily if it is not your end goal.
