The Role
While parts of the work were a challenge, it gave a good impression of how laboratory based work operates in the real world.
Working in a small group, everyone plays a critical role.
Without support from others in the group I'd have achieved far less.
It varies - work in my group has come in 'waves' and so I found myself either really busy or relatively free. Less-busy periods are useful for completing writeups and other projects.
Have managed my own project, but with advice and direction from my supervisor.
I've acquired a variety of new skills beyond anything I would have expected to learn during this placement.
The Company
A friendly bunch.
Company-side things were great, the recruitment agency (SRG) leave a fair bit to be desired.
I've been taught a lot of techniques which require a fair amount training in spite of only having a 1 year placement.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The job is great but there's a lack of graduate programmes for R&D, unfortunately.
The Culture
Plenty of other students to interact with.
Stevenage isn't the largest town so some places (e.g. the cinema) have a monopoly & feel they can charge whatever they want. In spite of that there's a lot to do and London is also close by.
Plenty of pubs and clubs. London is a short train journey away if you want more.
A few.
