Overview
The scheme involved participation in various practice area talks, networking sessions, and Q&A discussions with partners, associates and trainees at the firm. Participants were also allocated a trainee mentor and associate whom we shadowed on the third day.
Skills
My understanding of Latham's practice areas and culture has grown tremendously. In terms of skills, there was a great deal of specialist knowledge and information that I learnt during the scheme. Moreover, I found the networking sessions to be an excellent opportunity for me to develop soft skills and feel comfortable engaging members of the firm.
Business Insight
It was very insightful. The practice area talks opened my horizons to new groups that I had not been as familiar with, such as Restructuring & Special Situations. I left feeling very excited about many of Latham's practices, only furthering my desire to pursue a career at the firm.
Culture
Latham's culture is one-of-a-kind. The people I met were incredibly positive, and I was happy to see how tight-knit and non-hierarchical the community is. As an international student, I was very pleased to see the strong position the firm takes towards diversity & inclusion, something that is reflected in both its many affinity groups and strong BAME representation.
Your Impressions
5/5. The scheme was very enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it to future students. I only wish that I could have spent more time shadowing an associate, as I was very interested in learning about his personal experiences working at the firm. Of course, I understand the considerable constraints involved given that they must all be very busy!
Yes
Latham's culture is uniquely community-driven. From individual lawyers to affinity groups, everyone is involved in creating a united and positive space. I would encourage applicants to look at both the firm's amazing work and its special culture with a strong emphasis on how they fit with the firm's identity.
