Overview
My role sees me doing different tasks day-to-day. I might be planning and carrying out an experiment, analysing data to present to my supervisor or collaborating with students across the site. I meet with my supervisor regularly and we discuss how I am doing in the project team as well as in the extra-curricular activities I take part in such as Industrial Cadets.
Skills
I have really extended my practical laboratory skills through this placement from basic techniques such as sterile practices to working complicated equipment. I am also able to develop outside of the lab as I have taken part in activities such as STEM mentoring and IP shadowing meaning I have developed my presentation skills and my confidence networking in the workplace.
Responsibilities
My supervisor allowed me to learn without putting pressure on me and after watching me perform experiments, I was able to do them alone. On placement I would often do experiments myself and consider the next steps though I would discuss these with my supervisor to see what would be best for the project.
Support & Guidance
My project team was really helpful and willing to assist me in any of the work I was doing. Outside of them, the office I worked in was friendly and my line manager was open to any questions. The placement students in my department get along really well and we are always supporting each other at work and helping with development where possible.
Culture
The company is big on maintaining its culture and so departments often have team building activities as well as events to celebrate the achievements of all the teams. The atmosphere is friendly and everyone is happy to make time for a coffee if you want to have a chat. There is a good system in place if you feel uncomfortable or unsure about your work.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement and have grown a lot from it. I feel so much happier with the idea of joining the research industry after university and I have made so many friends, both with students and colleagues, during my time.
Yes
Be friendly and willing to learn. The staff that interviewed me were lovely and we had some good discussions but you need to do your research. The work load can be heavy at times depending on the project so you need to be willing to put in the time but you will be supported throughout.
