Overview
I liaise between private landowners/ agents and project mangers/ design and build team for various utilities and infrastructure schemes. I ensure that the construction teams for these schemes have access under the correct statutory powers to undertake their relevant works e.g. Laying water mains. I deal with the compulsory purchase of land should the scheme require it, and if the client has the statutory powers to do so. When gaining access for these schemes should it be for surveys or more intrusive work, I reference the land and confirm the owners, I then consult with the affect landowners/ parties. I will try to find out if there are ways to mitigate the impact of the works for the affected parties. I will then served the statutory notices to give powers of land entry. Following the completion of a scheme, I check to see that the land has been reinstated correctly. I then work out the value of the landowners losses and advise how much compensation our client pays. If the landowner believes they have incurred more significant losses, I will review their claim and work through it with their agent.
Skills
Both written and verbal skills have been developed after consultation with a large number of parties. I have learned more about project management and the importance of 'staying on top of your work'. This includes financial management of the project as forecasting and budgeting for fees is undertaken prior to the involvement of each project.
Responsibilities
Following the first couple of months a significant amount of independence was given, although still working within a team, many of the schemes are small enough to take on yourself. This meaning you undertake every process through out the different stages of a scheme.
Support & Guidance
Working in a team always allowed for questions to be asked and the ability to share solutions to different problems. Team meetings to evaluate workload take place weekly and meeting with your line manager occur regularly and can be informally scheduled.
Culture
The office in Stafford had regular social events and the wider company as a whole provided many opportunities for the graduates and placement students to socialise.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement more as I began to see changes in my work quality, I enjoyed seeing how the work we were doing impacted smaller areas.
Yes
There many many different divisions within the business that specialise in different roles within the industry, it could be worth seeing which division you'd prefer to join prior to joining any job within the industry.
