Overview
day to day IP's are generally lab based so in the office every day ususally half the time in the labs, and then half the time writing up experiments and other desk admin. You will be a part of a larger team of people, the lab work you do will primarily be for them until you get given your own project (about halfway through the year). you get more independence as the year goes on
Skills
yes so many skills, in Research and development there is a much broader range of skills used in comparison to manufacturing. We are trained in may more analystical techniques than manufacturers and also have more feasability to learn and try new things. I have also developed as a person being pushed out of your comfort zone doing things like presenting to the team and to the whole department. You learn to communicate alot more efficiently
Responsibilities
so much responsibility. As the year went on, you were trusted more and more, for example being given your own projects to do.Other teams would request help which meant thery trusted your analytical ability. There was no pressure to always say yes either which is good as sometimes the responsibility could get too muich but there was always the opportunities to take on more responsibility should you wish. My prohect helped me become more independent
Support & Guidance
Alot initially as obviously in the labs it would be dangerous at firsat, the equipment is expensive!! there is alot of training required before things can be done solo, usually 3 stages, a demonstration, a supervised run and then an unsupervised run befoire you are officially allowed to fly solo! your supervisor relationship is vital for gaining as much support as possible throughout the year, as well as after the year should you wish to come back, even as a grad
Culture
One of the best companies by far. My department is a large department but IP's were still noticed and given resposibilities. The team atmosphere was probably my favourite as the people are all chosen not only due to their experience and academics but sldo theyr personable skills. In particular me ad my supervior got on so so well and shared similar interests, this is how they usually pair up students and supervisors at GSK
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement year, the opportunities were endless, both work wise and extra curricular. There is the opportunity to get involved in national IP events, as well as site level events, and even inter departmental events which I found really fun. There was often random days where we would have fun activities like easter hunts, escape from buildings (fire escape routes!) and many other things. Some student do uni alongside which is not enjoyable
Yes
just go for it, don't be put off by the long application process as it really is worth it in the end! GSK are not looking for a robot who can perfectly answer every question, it is about how you think and act as a person in a difficult situation. Be prepared for your interviews but not over prepared, they want to see the best version of you and if it is all scripted they will know!
