Overview
Overall, the job requires me to be a general support for the analysis of samples submitted to the labs. Day to day this means running my own analysis on received samples, writing reports, supporting the team, ensuring cleanliness of lab to facilitate smoother testing and attending meetings.
Skills
Learned how to write reports to a testing lab standard, rather than University standard. Learned techniques hands on, that were only mentioned in University lectures. Learned aspects of the Metallography and steelmaking field rather than strictly Chemistry . Developed my ability to present to customers in the interest of safety/ smooth plant operation. Developed organisational skills more effectively structuring my time whilst running multiple analysis'.
Responsibilities
A significant level of responsibility was given, looking after the weekly checks and validation of certain equipment, running analysis independently, writing reports, having a valued opinion during meetings etc
Support & Guidance
Support was there from the company, my team and University whenever it was required.
Culture
Interesting company culture, due old steel worker culture mixed with newer ideologies from new employees
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the transfer from university to working life, its been good to be working on projects that mean something to the company. The work has been interesting and stimulating. I feel that my contribution was valued, making a difference to the team and work presented to customers, so overall a fulfilling experience.
