Overview
Day to day activities include attending meetings with various clients and preparing reports, design work and drawings. Since i just started my placement, most of the work is providing CAD drawings and then correcting those drawings based on the comments that you receive before it's being given out to the client. I also had to review reports on various projects and studies which needed to be submitted to the client/ governing agencies. Meeting various other senior engineers and then shadowing them was also there.
Skills
The new skills that I started learning include various functions in CAD which i never knew before. which includes collaboration with other cad engineers. the use of BIM 360 was also one of the new skills that i learned. The improvement of my communication and collaboration skill is something that you can find a massive difference on. The use of GIS software is also something that i have started learning. I have also learned about how a design goes through multiple stages of review before finally going out to the client.
Responsibilities
I've been given the responsibility of drafting CAD drawings for some highways and access points for a very big project which I gave during the second week. the feedbacks and comments that I got back helped me to improve my drafting skills with the help of an experienced CAD user. I have been given small tasks since i just started last week but these tasks are really important for the project and these tasks are designed in such way that you will be able to handle it.
Support & Guidance
The support and guidance that I've been getting is enormous. Every day I learn a lot from experienced professionals who support you in every way . The people here really enjoy you improving yourself and they will support you for it. even managers and engineers in high positions takes time to come and talk to you and teach you new stuff which shows how much this company supports its young engineers. This shows the culture of the company.
Culture
The general atmosphere is everyone is always friendly and cheerful even though the projects are really huge and important. the overall mood is people are happy and they are very friendly and nice. You wont feel left out even though you are a new starter. you will get respect and people welcomes you in. They take their time to answer all the questions you have. the company is focused on collaborative work and everyone works as one single team which is great to be a part of.
Your Impressions
Its been a week since i started my placement and i have enjoyed every day and look forward to the next day coming to the office. You learn a lot about how the industry work and how to use various tools which are used in the civil engineering field. you will also learn how to collaborate effectively with people form other disciplines to provide a complete and efficient work for the clients, Its a fun place to learn and work.
Yes
The main advice that i can give to people applying to Mott Macdonald is to be your self. Take your time to learn about the company and its values. make sure you learn about the current projects that they do. you should also show your drive during the interview process. The main advice is to be yourself as the company is all about diversity . Preparing early for the interview and applying after preparing properly is the best advice i can give.
