Overview
Involved working using computer software to aid design, mostly AutoCAD, Excel, and STAAD. I would generally work through hand calculations, verify them using simulations and then complete drawings. Sometimes, as a placement student I would be given smaller menial/admin tasks.
Skills
I have developed my computer skills with various softwares that I had either none or limited experience of. I also developed my softer skills, such as communication, talking to clients and contractors. I developed my skills in using codes and standards, such as the eurocodes.
Responsibilities
My responsibility level varied. At some points I was given entire projects to take the design lead on (which was obviously thoroughly checked). Other times I was given menial tasks, such as admin, or tasks others didn't want to do. This meant that some time I felt the work was very good, others not so much.
Support & Guidance
I received support when I needed it during my placement. I was guided through difficult problems or tasks. I also feel that if I was to have personal issues, the company would be supportive.
Culture
The company culture and atmosphere was great. I made many friends and enjoyed going into the office.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my placement. The only negatives were the periods where I wasn't given work and I was struggling to find things to do, and felt like I was straddling two teams, not really feeling like part of either.
Yes
I would recommend joining one team and making an impact there. A big and focused presence will allow you to take on more work and projects, which will make your time at the company great.
