Overview
I am involved with various parts of civil engineering; I have worked on drainage solutions, queries such as request for information from Site correspondence and on many different infrastructure projects aiding in design. This is mainly through software like AutoCad and AecoSim as well as other aspects of an engineering consultant role. I interact within the company with people in the office and remotely everyday, with constant communication and liase with clients frequently.
Skills
I have improved my software skills immensely; lots of new knowledge on Autocad and learnt how to utilise an entirely new software called Aecosim. I've also learnt how to approach different queries and follow up and deduce a solution through my experience. I've also learnt lots of new technical terms, knowledge and how to draw/read detail drawings and terminology.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given alot of independent responsibility within all tasks- it was as if i was treated as a graduate civil engineer and given the responsibilities equal to others. I've worked as second lead on projects, designing solutions and going to site to visit clients and resolve any issues.
Support & Guidance
The colleagues on my placement were very helpful and happy to aid whenever I am stuck or have a question. There is great communication and help within the community of the company.
Culture
It is a very formal and office like culture, with a sense of being sensible. In a way it is awkward but once you settle it is easier to develop friendships with collegues. Everyone is very helpful and willing to aid eachother on projects and sharing information which is nice.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it, it was a good well-rounded experience and it gave me a proper insight into what civil engineering really entails. I do wish there was more of a social aspect however that is not to say that there was not none at all.
Yes
It is scary to be just thrown in at the start, but try your best and ask around for help as people are very willing to aid with problems! Definitely get experience with AutoCad as this is their main basis of software as well as Openbuildings/Openroads.
