Overview
On a day-to-day basis I maintained a Dashboard data set for my team, this was reviewed in weekly calls in order to provide updates on opportunities and identify room for growth. Working on a range of project through my placement, starting new initiatives outside of my core role which take up a majority of time.
Skills
Developing my Excel skills through this role, diving into formula and pivots, exporting and importing data across platforms. I became skilled using IBM tools; ISC, Manthan, Empower ME ect. Team work skills are developed, interacting daily in my close team whilst working in extended teams on new initiatives and forms of giveback.
Responsibilities
IBM are very good at handing off responsibility to their placement students. I was progressively given more responsible roles as my placement progressed. IBM are not shy to rely on their placement students to drive the success of the business.
Support & Guidance
Their was a multitude of support and guidance during my placement. You are directly in contact with your Foundation Manager and Task Manager, both playing an equally important managerial role. Amongst this placement student's were enrolled in fortnightly Q&A calls where they could stress any issues during their placement.
Culture
The company culture is a collaborative and inclusive culture. IBM really drive towards being inclusive to all, hosting many events to include all minorities. The work environment itself is very friendly, although they demand a high output from their employees, it is very professional and I was never asked to perform any tasks I thought unreasonable.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year, providing my with a new insight into professional working life and giving me new skills I can take back to University and develop in my future career. IBM has also been a place to develop a social life that will continue beyond my placement year.
Yes
Really make the most of the opportunity, any chance to do something new is a chance to develop your character and gain new skills. Don't be afraid to ask to do something, the worst answer you will get back is no!
