    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working on wastewater projects incorporating new build and refurbishment of apparatus. Clean water projects will include Impounding and Service Reservoirs, Slab designs, road extensions, Pumping Stations, Bore hole etc. Assist the project team with project completions and handover. Be involved in assisting designers develop new and refurbishment works for Water & Wastewater Treatment plants Involvement in the installation and commissioning of projects from design to handover, the full lifecycle of a project. Work within the team of mechanical, EICA and process engineers to develop best practice, a strong health & safety environment and value for money. Creating specifications to handover to subcontractors.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my placement as a civil engineer, I had the opportunity to acquire valuable new skills and enhance existing ones. Firstly, I honed my proficiency in structural analysis software, enabling me to efficiently model and analyze complex structures. I also had the opportunity of developing my Autocad Robot skills, whilst designing a reinforced concrete slab with piles. Additionally, I expanded my knowledge of sustainable design principles, incorporating eco-friendly practices into my projects. I also developed stronger communication and teamwork abilities through regular collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including contractors. Overall, my placement allowed me to broaden my skill set, empowering me to approach future engineering challenges with increased competence and expertise.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my recent placement as a civil engineer, I was entrusted with a moderate level of responsibility, which provided me with valuable hands-on experience. I had the opportunity to actively contribute to various project phases, including conducting site inspections, assisting with design revisions, and preparing technical reports. I was also involved in coordinating with subcontractors and attending client meetings under supervision. While I had a supportive environment and guidance from senior engineers, I was encouraged to take ownership of certain tasks and demonstrate my abilities. This level of responsibility allowed me to develop crucial decision-making skills and a deeper understanding of the practical aspects of civil engineering projects.

  • Throughout my year in industry placement as a civil engineer, I received a moderate level of support and guidance, which played a pivotal role in my professional growth. They were readily available to answer my queries and provide constructive feedback on my work. Additionally, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team, fostering a supportive and knowledge-sharing environment. While I was given independence on certain tasks, the supportive network ensured I had the necessary guidance to overcome challenges and achieve my goals.

  • The company culture and general atmosphere during my year in industry placement as a civil engineer were incredibly relaxed and vibrant. This relaxed culture contributed to a healthy work-life balance with flexible hours.   • I thoroughly enjoyed my year in industry placement as a civil engineer. The company provided a supportive and engaging environment that made every day enjoyable. The challenging yet rewarding projects allowed me to apply my skills and knowledge. The company's positive culture, inclusive atmosphere, and supportive colleagues made the experience even more gratifying. I felt valued and appreciated, which motivated me to give my best. Overall, I can confidently say that I had a fantastic time during my placement, and it has been a truly enjoyable experience.
