Overview
My day to day role involves speaking to Severn Trent and its contractors regarding the progress of my schemes and next steps. I regularly arrange access to private land for the completion of intrusive and non-intrusive surveys and speak to landowners to give them updates in the scheme. I have also been responsible for calculating compensation claims for landowners following the completion of work on their and negotiating the claim with them.
Skills
I have learn how to effectively communicate with people and manage my time. I have become more confident talking to people in meetings and over the phone
Responsibilities
I have been given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement year, which involved managing my own schemes, and seeing through the completion of ground investigation works from start to finish on two larger schemes. I was also given the responsibility to manage my own time since my placement began.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support throughout my placement, from my land manager, team and colleagues, and from Early Carreers team.
Culture
Great company culture and atmosphere, there are regular trips out to the pub after work as well as a monthly drinks night in the office after work. There are lots of wider events in the company to get involved in eg sports clubs, CPD days, sector away days, CAAV/RICS training days etc
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year. It has allowed me to gain so much hands on experience within the sector which will be very value to my studies when I return to university for final year.
Yes
If you get placed into a sector that hadn't previously been a top choice, go into it with an open mind.
