Overview
Experimenting and learning about Li-ion cells and what influences their performance Performing and developing new testing methods for exploring these properties Investigating new connection methods for improving test set-up Writing technical reports and participate in information sharing meetings Working with a team to learn about the challenges and opportunities for Li-ion technology in the electrification of commercial vehicles.
Skills
I have developed my communication and leadership skills by working with technicians and other scientists My IT skills were developed by using Matlab, Excel, Origin, PowerPoint and learning how to use new software (Maccor and Novonix) Attention to detail has improved by looking at anomalies Perseverance and problem solving skills have developed when overcoming issues with software Time management when planning tests and prioritizing
Responsibilities
I was given responsibility of testing a batch cells including benchmark and cycle life I was the first to use the new cycler (Novonix) so it was my responsibility to make sure it was working properly and solve any issues When doing lab experiments I had the responsibility of keeping to the health and safety rules by wearing the right PPE and handling the equipment
Support & Guidance
I had the support of my line manager who I had regular meetings with and was able to contact him outside of these meetings when necessary. The technicians guided me through the experiments and were available when I needed help I was able to ask the other scientists in my team for help when needed
Culture
It was a good and health atmosphere, everyone was really friendly and approachable. Different departments worked together constantly and it was easy to ask each other's advice
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement a lot, I learnt and developed a lot of skills in a healthy environment. I also enjoyed the extra curriculars that I was involved in such as delivering a STEM activity pack to high school students.
Yes
If unsure, always ask for help. Get involved in the extra curriculars such as volunteering. Actively learn about the work, especially with calculations. Make use of the courses Cummins offers
