    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Contribute to the continuous testing of engines in the dynamometer test cells by creating instructions to run the cell, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, maintaining logs of engine operation and analyzing data. Day-to-day we must maintain a high standard of documentation to ensure all testing is logged as well as fluent communication to ensure issues are fixed promptly and test requests and translated into engine operation correctly

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My ability to communicate as part of a team and function has developed considerably, I feel far more confident in the workplace now. My engine knowledge has also been expanded by this placement, with insight into specifications an engine must meet and how individual components contribute to an engines performance. I have also been given an opportunity to develop competency in Simulink with a long term project alongside day to day responsibilities.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I believe I was given a lot of responsibilty during my placement. Due to the continuous nature of testing, you are required to check and control your own work. Further, the value of the prototype engines we were testing ensured that we were thorough with our work, so as to not cause any damage.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • When needed, senior members of staff were always available to check over work or provide guidance. My manager would be often involved in the test work that I was doing, sitting in on data reviews and providing insight into issues that we were facing.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general atmosphere at the company is great for students, everyone is approachable and whilst there is certainly initiative to take responsibility for your actions, there is always support from those more senior if needed. However, if I was to apply as a full-time employee, it may not be the best role/ company for personal development, as I feel that there is perhaps a lack of drive to continuously develop

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, the fact that there are so many students within the office/ engine plant made the atmosphere comparable to university - given there are plenty of opportunities to socialize. The role itself was exciting sometimes, however can dull down if you are not running an engine - so I'd extra project work to keep yourself busy
