Overview
I work with the COO of the segment and help to manage all commercials across the portfolio including multi million dollar deals - tracking of all finances, resource costs and accounting. In addition to this, I also take on client facing work and help deliver some of the most cutting edge innovations. This is done via IBM design thinking and working with talented developers and project managers to ensure we deliver the best solution for our client.
Skills
I developed my ability and skill to be assertive. am also part of the CA Team and have demonstrated my assertiveness when finding people for the Speed Networking event. People were not responsive on the group chat, so I privately messaged every member of the team ensuring that my message conveyed the importance of them using their contacts for the event. I have also become assertive in saying "no" to work so that I am able to fully concentrate on my projects and am not overwhelmed with other work and underperforming. Furthermore, I am assertive when setting expectations and deadlines to ensure that I am not overpromising and not delivering what I said I would when I said I would.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility on my placement and was not treated like an intern at all. I was responsible for creating weekly and monthly financial documents for both internal and client use. In addition to this, I was trusted in roles such as a Business Analyst, Scrum Master and User Researcher and responsible for presenting key sprint deliverables. I was always explained the importance of a task so I understood how it fed into the bigger picture.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance from my task manger, foundation manager, partners on the account and my fellow peers. This support was when I was struggling with tasks, presenting back my work, creating new ideas and launching brand new initiatives. I always felt like there was someone who I could turn to for help and I never felt alone or that I could not ask anyone for support and guidance or ask questions
Culture
The company was great to work for! The culture was amazing and senior people always made time to speak to me. There were no silos between people and everyone is always willing to help someone else. We also regularly had spring, winter and summer socials where consulting could get together over some food and drink and network with each other. IBM is also striving to become more diverse and inclusive regarding ethnic minority advancement and gender diversityt
Your Impressions
i love my placement and would recommend it to anyone! I have had an amazing work life balance, grown so much as a person and learn lots along the way! I have had the opportunity to work on finances, client projects, giveback initiatives and extra-curriculum activities. I loved meeting new people, learning new things and just being able to be myself. I wouldn't have changed a thing about my placement year, it was brillaint
Yes
Be yourself and not a robot, it is important to speak like how you normally would and not speak how you think you should speak. People love working with people with personalities and not people who are robots and part of the machine. have confidence in putting your ideas across and putting yourself out there, it will help you network and people will respect your ambition and courageousness. it is competitive so you need to try and stand out from the crowd
