Overview
I work on a variety of clients each day, preparing compliance forms and spreadsheets to calling clients to solve their ad-hoc advisory queries. Day's vary in work levels, depending on the different 'seasons' and HMRC deadlines. Typically day-to-day tasks include both internal and external email drafting, spreadsheet calculations and data analysis, inputting of data into software, client calls, team calls and assisting with wider projects.
Skills
Communication is needed for working in tax, to explain complex tax legislation and finding to clients in a way they understand. You don't need to be great with numbers, just know the basics of Excel before joining. You will also need to be adaptable and flexible, as you will work with a variety of different clients at once. Strong time management is also essential.
Responsibilities
I was given my first client call and work within my first week of joining. You go straight into client work from the get go, and the fostering environment enables new starters to get stuck straight in, while feeling supported on tasks. In person meetings with clients are not uncommon with placement students and online calls are frequent. After 6-months you receive your own allocated clients that you are responsible for. Offering a greater sense of client control and responsibility. Overall, RSM provides a great sense of responsibility right from the start and throughout.
Support & Guidance
Support is received from the start to the end. From meeting my colleauges for a coffee before starting, to having leaving drinks. You feel a part of the team from day 1 and the careers team help support you in your role as much as possible. The line manager and buddy system also offer amazing support to settle in and guide you through your placement. Guidance wise, this is a well structured placement.
Culture
Company culture is one of internal growth and development, from school leaver to partner. Everyone encountered is lovely and wants to be here at RSM. CEO has set great values which I would say are followed by everyone I work with. Lively general atmosphere in the office and great lunch/ relaxation places, with a pool table. General atmosphere of joy around my office and team when working.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement fully. It has been a great insight into working life, as well as the world of tax. I have learnt so much from the process of the placement and lessons for life. I have made great connections with many people and feel my placement exceeded expectation. If I was to receive an offer from RSM I would be very likely to return as a graduate.
Yes
BE YOURSELF. They look for interesting people whose values align with RSM's, so if your values align and you be yourself during the application process there is nothing stopping you. Try your best to plan for the assessment by researching RSM and it's different functions, in addition to having an interest in tax/ accounting/ audit etc...
