The Role
The work the placement offered was good. I wouldn't say it was the best job ever, but it has highlighted what aspects of work I do and don't enjoy. This will help me with future career planning.
Working in a large company, it is hard to feel extremely close knit but being involved in organising and going to social events helped break boundaries.
I was given guidance from a variety of department members and great feedback to help me improve and develop.
Some weeks were busy and others pretty empty. The balance wasn't always there as it was hard to plan whether scientific experiments would be successful. I feel I could have taken on more varied tasks or had more structure to the work I was given.
I was completely responsible for my own lab and project work. Once I had been shown lab techniquies I was left to work independently (with support at hand if required).
I have developed many scientific skills that will aid me in my final year of uni. These skills and proffessional working skills will greatly help me in future jobs.
The Company
In a large open plan office you can't have that much 'fun' without disturbing others.
The process of getting the placement and recieving adequate support was great. I think the work planned for me to do could have had more structure in terms of timings and I think I would have preferred to rotate within my department to learn a wider range of skills.
I recieved all training required for my role and the company even held a career day which greatly helped me think about my future career development and answered questions.

Future employment in R&D is not expected straight after uni. But the cpmpany offers graduates schemes in other buisness areas that interested me. As an IP student I was able to apply and be fast tracked through the grad scheme application process. The career day put on by the company also highlighted the range of interesting careers you can have with the company and that they allow you to move to different roles to further develop your career.
The Culture
There was a good social scene, slightly limited by the area we were living in.
Not as cheap accomodation or cost of socialising as when at uni.
I would not recommend young people to live in this area
The opportunities weren't regular but were good when they were organised
