Overview
I use PAT (typically spectrometers) in-line on processes in tablet manufacture to monitor quality attributes of the product in real time. I then use data analytics (PLS and PCA modelling methods) to convert spectral data into an interpretable form - relating the data to critical quality attributes of the process and final product. Another focus of my role is multivariate statistical process monitoring (MSPM). MSPM is a technique used in various industries to monitor complex processes. It involves the analysis of multiple variables simultaneously to identify patterns, detect deviations, and monitor the overall process performance. My team uses the technique to monitor various critical process parameters and variables involved in the tablet production processes.
Skills
Whilst the placement was targeted to engineers, I got to learn data analytical techniques that can be used to assess performance attributes of tablet production processes. I've had the opportunity to develop my communication skills - presenting results from testing new PAT instruments and providing recommendations whether to purchase the device. I also gained an understanding of process safety. The team had purchased new instruments that arrived at the beginning of my placement. I worked with trained risk assessors to author 3 risk assessments covering operation, ergonomics, and explosive hazards.
Responsibilities
My main project involved evaluating a new technology for the PAT team. I was my responsibility to design experiments, conduct testing, and analyse and present results. My presentation on the final evaluation of the technology was taken as if any other permanent employee had undertaken the project. This was similar for my other projects - I did not feel like I was 'just the placement student' - I was accountable for the work and projects I was assigned.
Support & Guidance
My team and manager were always happy to support me throughout the year. This was especially important early on, when everything was new and processes were unknown. Regular check ins meant that I wasn't left to my own devices on projects I had the necessary support when and where I needed it. I felt comfortable asking questions about next steps in projects and about what to do if I felt stuck with a particular problem.
Culture
At GSK the culture is built on supporting each other. This was especially true in my team, everyone was happy to help and learn from each other. The wider culture allowed me to feel the impact of my work. It felt natural to think back to the patient at the other side of the tablet manufacture. The work environment was relaxed, I did make mistakes during my placement, but this resulted in understanding and working together to fix the issues.
Your Impressions
Overall, my placement was enjoyable. I had responsibility of my own project, worked with a supportive team, developed myself, and felt I had purpose. There were times however, where I had less to do and found myself bored. Other than that though, there isn't anything that I would change about the year.
Yes
Firstly, learn a bit about the cultural values and be able to show you understand them in your application and during the assessment centre. Emphasise you enthusiasm for the industry and illustrate your motivation to contribute to GSK's success. Provide concrete examples of your teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership abilities. It is important to display your genuine interest and passion for the opportunity, and be confident in presenting your best self throughout the application process
