Overview
Primarily assisting with month end and yearly reporting through completion of various reconciliations, for example prepayments, fixed assets, Net Investments, etc. Also carrying out investigations, where necessary.
Skills
I have learnt a great deal in relation to my accounting degree. The theoretical knowledge taught at university has been solidified by applying relevant treatments to 'real-life' scenarios. I have also been able to learn more about the operation of excel and its uses, for example, pivot tables and complex formulae.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was assigned my own reconciliations which I, solely, have been responsible for. These were to be prepared either during month end, or the period between post month end and our monthly reconciliation meetings where work was evaluated and feedback provided. Month end recs were especially important as other work could not be done until these were completed.
Support & Guidance
I have received a great deal of support and guidance. My team were always prepared to answer my queries and provide help where necessary. Regular one-to-one meetings with my manager also provided me with the opportunity to receive feedback from my colleagues about my performance, but also for me express an interest in areas other than those originally assigned to me. For example, I wanted to learn more about taxation; discussing this with my manager I was able to take on more work relating to tax and, therefore, better understand the accounting principles around this.
Culture
Everyone is very chatty and approachable, but at the same time dedicated to their work. There is a good balance between socialising and work time which helped me to get to know everyone better and produce healthy working relations.
Your Impressions
I greatly enjoyed my placement. I have been given the chance to experience exactly how accounting principles are incorporated into a business and how the month end and reporting process works, all while making good working relations.
Yes
Always have an attitude to learn. There are lots of work areas to immerse yourself in; if there is an area of accounting you would like to learn more about, tell your manager. As well as your fundamental responsibilities, there is an opportunity to learn more.
