Overview
My role is a Design Consultant. This means I have a took upon UX, UI, user research, content and service design. I do a lot of design thinking activities like user empathy mapping, as-is and to-be journey mapping, and pain points. I work in teams in an agile way to produce outcomes for clients. We work in sprints which are fast paced and means we get results quickly. There is a lot of group work.
Skills
Yes, I was completely new to UX so have learnt everything. Enterprise Design Thinking is a big part of UX so I have learnt all those activities. I've learnt software like Figma, InVision, Mural etc. I've learnt agile working methods like sprints, stand-up meetings, retros etc.
Responsibilities
Yes, there was a point in time that all the other designers were away on a live client project and I was trusted and given the responsibility to continue working on the project, making sure we didn't fall behind. I was trusted to run workshops with the clients and get feedback on them as the only IBM representative.
Support & Guidance
Lots. When I started, I was made aware of who we could go to if we needed help or support with any issues. I had weekly meetings with my task manager throughout the year and the Hello iX team had many meetings at the beginning to check how we were settling in.
Culture
Fun and inclusive. There was a big effort for communities (like societies) that offered groups for minorities and aimed to bring people from all walks of life together. There were also lots of groups like book club that run events and always free pizza for Consulting.
Your Impressions
I loved my internship. So much so that I have applied to return to IBM as a grad. The people are all great and there are some amazing opportunities I have been able to access through working at IBM.
Yes
It's not just a tech company with old grumpy men! It's a diverse company with fun projects, events and people.
